Anticipation

I'm at home and have been for a few days. My family opens presents on Christmas Eve, after supper has been eaten and the dishes have been cleared, so there's always a build up as the day goes on. All of my immediate family, all three of my living grandparents and my younger brother's girlfriend are here, essentially waiting for supper. It's fun. And it's good to be home.

Happy Holidays everyone!

Me update

It has been pointed out to me that I haven't had a post about me recently. In a word, I'm doing well. I submitted a paper in mid-November, which was really nice. I hadn't submitted a paper in almost two years, so it felt good to submit something. Though the submission itself was a nerve-wracking process: my collaborators were in a different state and we were doing paper revisions through email. Not good. I finally had to throw my hands up and put my trust in the collaborators. The paper itself is okay but damn it's full of easily-fixed typos. Argh.

Boy returned from internship last weekend, and it's nice to have him back. Unfortunately it means cooking more often, and cleaning up more since his standards of neatness are not the same as mine. (Since we don't officially live together, he doesn't have as much storage and stuff here as I do, so I don't think it'd be fair to him to demand equal housework). I think Kitten is happy he's back too since he's much better at playing with her than I am.

Otherwise my life is back to the daily grind: doing research, trying to find time and warm days to exercise, and finishing up my class. I get to go home next week, and I'm really looking forward to it. I haven't seen my family in a year. And the warmer weather and food I can't find here will be great...

Tell me something I don't know...

This story reports on a new UN study that has found that gender imbalance worsens poverty:

"There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women," said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

"Discrimination against women of all ages deprives the world's children - all of them, not just the half who are girls - of the chance to reach their potential."

Tee Hee

Just finished watching the second half of the UCLA - USC football game. They say no one thought UCLA could beat USC. I did - I've seen lots of upsets in my life, and this is yet another one to truly savor. I really don't like USC. They're so smug.
